Be prepared for severe weather!  Tornado season in Georgia is from March until the end of May, with the highest number of tornadoes occurring in April.  The Marietta Fire Department wants you to be prepared for severe weather whenever it occurs.

  • Know what the difference is between a watch and warning.  A Tornado Watch means conditions are favorable for tornadoes to develop, but there is not an imminent threat.  A Tornado Warning means a tornado has been detected and an imminent threat to life and property has developed.

If you are under a Tornado Warning, find shelter right away!

  • If you can safely get to a sturdy building, then do so immediately.
  • Go to a safe room, basement, or storm cellar.
  • If you are in a building with no basement, then get to a small interior room on the lowest level.
  • Stay away from windows, doors, and outside walls.
  • Watch out for flying debris that can cause injury or death.
  • Use your arms to protect your head and neck.
  • Do not get under an overpass or bridge.

Taking shelter under an overpass is one of the most dangerous things you can do when a tornado is approaching. The structures may enhance the winds and blast flying debris into and under the structure. A strong tornado may even cause the bridge or overpass to collapse on top of you.  At the very least, taking shelter under an overpass puts you at a higher elevation with no protection from debris and winds. The Norman, Oklahoma Weather Service office compiled a presentation on the topic after the May 3, 1999 tornado outbreak, which can be viewed here. More on tornado safety here.
